Two young girls reportedly drown in Luapula river during Easter event

Two members of the United Church of Zambia (UCZ) have drowned in Luapula river during the Easter church event, according to the police.

This happened when five girls went for a swim near the Miloke Secondary School harbour during an Easter holiday church event.

“I can confirm that two members of the UCZ in Samfya have drowned in the Luapula river during an Easter holiday church event,” Luapula Police Chief Fwambo Siame said in a statement on Monday.

He named the deceased as Polyne Mwansa and Charity Mwelwa both aged 17 who reportedly drowned while swimming on the river.

The two victims, according to Siame, were among a group of five girls who went for a swim near the Miloke Secondary School harbour.

He said police received a report from Reverend Daniel Kabalwe that two youths from UCZ drowned in the Luapula river at Miloke Secondary School harbour .

They were swept away by the water current and bodies of the departed have not been retrieved.

The search continues.
