Two juveniles from Lusaka’s Kalingalinga compound have died after being swept away by strong water currents in an area between Chimbotela and Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Headquarters.
Police spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed the deaths of Beauty Phiri, 14, and Anita Mwale, 15, in a statement issued on Friday, saying the incident is believed to have occurred around 04:00 hours.
On February 27, 2025, at approximately 13:40 hours, Kalingalinga Police Post received a report from Beatrice Kalunga, a 33-year-old resident of Garden Chilulu, regarding the drowning of Phiri and Mwale.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the two deceased juveniles, along with a 13-year-old girl—Kalunga’s daughter—had encountered Mathews Phiri, 20, who was on his way to morning prayers.
Phiri invited them to join him at a prayer site in the Chimbotela area.
While returning, the group waded through floodwaters but lost their original path due to the rising water levels.
“Unfortunately, Beauty Phiri and Anita Mwale were swept away by strong currents, while the 13-year-old girl was rescued by Mathews Phiri,” Hamoonga said.

Police have since visited and processed the scene.
Beauty Phiri’s body has been retrieved, while the search for Anita Mwale’s remains is ongoing.
“The Zambia Police Service urges parents and guardians to exercise caution and educate children on the dangers of crossing flooded areas during the rainy season,” Hamoonga added.
He assured that further updates would be provided as the search continues.
