The opposition Citizen First (CF) party, led by Harry Kalaba, has suffered a significant setback as two of its senior members defected to the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).
Kwibisa Mwanawina, who served as the National Chairperson for Communications and party Spokesperson, along with Charles Musungulwa, the party’s former Youth Affairs Chairperson, made the announcement on Thursday during a media briefing in Lusaka.
Mwanawina explained that the decision to join UPND was driven by President Hakainde Hichilema’s effective governance and leadership style.
He said the move followed extensive consultations and reflections on the best political direction for Zambia.
“We have taken time to reflect, meditate, and analyze the governance style of President Hichilema, and we have realized that the formula being implemented by the Head of State signals that Zambia is headed for greatness,” Mwanawina stated.

Both Mwanawina and Musungulwa pledged their support for President Hichilema’s vision, political will, and developmental agenda.
Cornelius Mweetwa, the UPND Spokesperson, welcomed the two defectors, emphasizing that the UPND was an inclusive party with room for all Zambians.
He encouraged the general leadership of the party to integrate the new members and ensure they were given appropriate roles.
“President Hichilema has always said that UPND is a party with many rooms, and you are welcome to join us,” Mweetwa said.
UPND National Youth Chairperson Gilbert Liswaniso also spoke, urging discipline and unity within the party as it continues to grow.
