Donald Trump has made a historic comeback, winning the 2024 U.S. presidential election and becoming the 47th President of the United States after skipping one term.

His victory over Vice President Kamala Harris was projected by Fox News just before midnight on the West Coast, putting him past the 270 electoral votes needed to secure the presidency.

In his victory speech to cheering supporters in Florida, Trump declared, “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate.”

He promised his supporters a return to the policies and approach that marked his first term in office, highlighting his commitment to “making America strong, proud and secure.”

The election results drew immediate reactions from global leaders, including Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema.

In a message of congratulations, Hichilema recognized Trump’s achievement in becoming both the 45th and 47th President, calling it a testament to the confidence of the American people.

“The historic achievement of being elected as the 45th and 47th President of the United States is not only testament to the confidence the American people have in his leadership, but a demonstration of their free will to choose leaders,” Hichilema said.

President Hichilema further expressed optimism about U.S.-Zambia relations under Trump’s leadership.

“We look forward to continuing and strengthening our bilateral cooperation and deepening the ties between our two nations,” he added.

Hichilema emphasised the value of longstanding partnerships with the United States in areas such as trade, investment, and security.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also offered his congratulations, underscoring the close alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom.

“As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defense of our shared values of freedom, democracy, and enterprise,” Starmer said.

He expressed his hope that Trump’s leadership would boost areas of mutual interest, particularly in technology and innovation.

“From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come,” Starmer stated.

Trump’s return to the White House is notable as he becomes one of the few U.S. presidents in history to serve two non-consecutive terms.

His 2024 victory reflects the enduring support of his base and the polarizing yet impactful presence he maintains in American politics.

The results signal a renewed commitment to Trump’s policies and approaches, particularly among his core supporters, as he prepared to guide the United States through the challenges and opportunities of his second administration.

In the coming days, Trump’s transition team was expected to outline key policy priorities and assemble a cabinet, marking the beginning of a new era in U.S. leadership on both domestic and international fronts.
