Donald Trump narrowly escaped a second assassination attempt in as many months on Sunday.

The incident occurred while Trump was playing golf at his private club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

According to MailOnline, Secret Service agents responded to a report of a man, later identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, who was spotted pointing a rifle through a fence surrounding the golf course.

The suspect, hiding in the bushes a few hundred yards from Trump, fled the scene when agents opened fire.

Routh abandoned his rifle and other belongings before being apprehended.

The FBI has described the incident as an apparent attempted assassination on the GOP nominee.

This attempt followed a similar attack in July, where Trump was grazed by a bullet fired from an unsecured roof at a Pennsylvania rally, resulting in the death of one supporter and injuries to two others.

Trump took to social media after the golf course was secured, expressing his gratitude to the Secret Service and law enforcement.

“I would like to thank everyone for your concern and well wishes – It was certainly an interesting day!” Trump wrote.

“Most importantly, I want to thank the US Secret Service, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and his Office of brave and dedicated Patriots, and all of Law Enforcement, for the incredible job done today at Trump International in keeping me, as the 45th President of the United States, and the Republican Nominee in the upcoming Presidential Election, SAFE.”
