A 35-year-old woman has died, and her three-month-old baby is battling for life after being hit by a dislodged truck tyre in Nachanga village, about 45 kilometres north of Isoka town in Muchinga Province.
The tragic incident occurred around 07:00 hours along the Great North Road, involving a Mercedes-Benz truck and trailer carrying copper cathodes en route to Tanzania.
Muchinga Province Police Commissioner, Daniel Moola, confirmed the development, identifying the truck driver as Mohammed Yahaya, 30, of Dodoma, Tanzania.
He escaped unhurt along with two male passengers on board.

“Two pedestrians were involved—Elina Nakamba, 35, of Nachanga village, sustained fatal head and body injuries and died on the spot,” said Moola.
He added that the body was taken to Isoka District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Also injured in the accident was a 12-year-old boy from Nachanga village in Chief Kafwimbi’s area, who complained of waist and general body pain.
He is admitted to Kalungu Rural Health Centre.
Nakamba’s three-month-old daughter sustained bruises on her forehead and is also receiving treatment at the same facility.
According to police, the accident happened when a tyre detached from the left side of the trailer and struck the pedestrians, who were walking from west to east along the road.
