>A 33-year-old female trader on Wednesday collapsed in the Central Business District after the Lusaka City Council (LCC) confiscated her storage container and demanded that she collects it at the Civic Center.

The unknown female trader collapsed after she was told to pay K18, 000 in order to return the storage container, which had been placed along Freedom Way.

The husband to the unidentified woman rushed her to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) to seek medical attention as it was alleged that she had developed high blood pressure after the ordeal.

Zambia Monitor, learning of the development, visited the scene and found the woman being picked up by the husband and later rushed her to UTH.

Onlookers lamented that the Council should have given the woman a grace period to remove the container instead of forcefully seizing it and demanding that she pays K18, 000 in order to collect it.

Street vendors in Lusaka on Tuesday woke up to a rude shock after the Zambia police in collaboration with Lusaka City council razed down their makeshift stalls on the streets of the capital city in the early hours.

The visibly disturbed street vendors said that they were extremely disappointed with government’s decision to remove them from the streets without giving them notice.

The vendors lamented the decision to remove them from the streets was a sign that government did not care about their welfare as street vending was their only source of livelihood.

Police in full riot gear have since been keeping vigil in the Central Business District as vendors are seen watching in disbelief with some of them shedding tears.

Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary, Mambo Hamaundu, said street vendors had been removed from the Central Business District to restore order in the capital city.
