TONSE Alliance threatens retaliation using ‘any means necessary’ if supporters are visited with violence

The TONSE Alliance has directed its members and supporters to defend themselves against political violence from the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres, using “any means necessary.”

Alliance Spokesperson, Sean Tembo, addressing the media on Saturday at Crest Lodge in Lusaka’s Ibex area, stated that future aggression by UPND cadres during campaigns would be met with equal and proportionate force.

Tembo explained that this resolution stemmed from the alleged failure of the Zambia Police to enforce the law fairly and equitably.

“Any future aggression by UPND cadres during campaigns shall and must be met with an equal and proportionate reaction, especially in the face of the Zambia Police’s failure to enforce the law,” Tembo warned.

He also called on opposition political parties outside the TONSE Alliance to engage in dialogue aimed at fielding single candidates to prevent vote-splitting during elections.

“The Alliance is willing to make compromises to address vote-splitting once and for all,” Tembo said, urging other opposition leaders to prioritize the interests of the Zambian people by embracing collaboration.

Tembo further announced that the Alliance would field candidates in all upcoming by-elections, including the Parliamentary By-Elections in Petauke and Pambashe, as well as Councillor Elections in Mongu and Mpongwe.

He confirmed that the New Congress Party (NCP) would remain the platform for all Alliance candidates, including those in the 2026 general elections.

Additionally, Tembo revealed that Dr. Cephas Mukuka, the former Deputy Secretary General of the Citizens First (CF) party, had joined the Alliance and would be assigned a portfolio soon.

The Alliance urged unity among opposition parties, emphasizing the need for collective action to challenge the ruling party effectively.
