The Tonse Alliance has notified Inspector General of Police, Graphael Musamba, of its plans to stage nationwide protests against proposed constitutional amendments.
In a letter dated March 10, 2025, Alliance spokesperson and Patriots for Economic Progress (PEP) leader, Sean Tembo, claimed that the amendments were announced by President Hakainde Hichilema during Women’s Day celebrations in Kasama, Northern Province.
Tembo alleged that the proposed changes were designed to undermine Zambia’s democracy, claiming that the government intended to remove the 50+1 clause and extend the presidential term from five to seven years.
“It is our belief that these amendments will provide Mr. Hichilema with a backdoor route to cling to power, against the wishes of the majority of Zambians,” Tembo stated.
He announced that protests would take place on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, with demonstrators in Lusaka marching from the High Court to Parliament Buildings.
In other provinces, participants would march from their respective Civic Centers to the High Courts.
“We shall deploy ushers to ensure the protest does not disrupt traffic,” Tembo added.

In response, State House Chief Communications Specialist, Clayson Hamasaka, dismissed Tembo’s claims as baseless and speculative.
“Everything in that notice is pure imagination,” Hamasaka said, denying any plans to remove the 50+1 requirement or extend the presidential term.
“You want to engage in anarchy based on your own lies,” he wrote in a WhatsApp group, accusing certain individuals of spreading falsehoods to incite unrest.
He further suggested that unnamed politicians were manipulating others while enjoying a comfortable life abroad.
“The main creator of these lies is sipping coffee overseas, while here, they want to send other people’s children into the streets to protest based on fabrications,” he wrote.
