Three MPs tell court Zulu’s claim on planned parliament dissolution was a huge joke

Three Members of Parliament have testified in Lusaka Magistrates’ Court that a video by Munir Zulu, in which he claimed President Hakainde Hichilema would dissolve Parliament, was merely a joke.

Choonde Saka (Milenge), Mulenga Fube (Chilubi), and Francis Kapyanga (Mpika) as defense witnesses, stated that the video contained no seditious content and was received with amusement.

Saka labeled the video as a “laughable matter,” noting that, as an independent MP, he understood the procedures for dissolving Parliament and found Zulu’s claims misleading.

Fube, who was present when Zulu made the statement, described it as an “ice breaker” that elicited laughter and whistling from the audience.

Kapyanga reported that the video, shown to a crowd of 4,700 in his constituency, was also received as a joke, with everyone laughing.

Zulu is accused of making seditious remarks on social media on September 6, 2023, claiming President Hichilema would dissolve Parliament on September 8, 2023, and call for early elections.

Zulu allegedly encouraged Zambians to prepare for campaigning following the dissolution.
