The family members who perished from food poisoning included a mother and her two children, aged three years and six months.

Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Lucky Munkhondya, revealed in a statement on Monday that the said three met their fate after reportedly eating food suspected to have been poisoned in unclear circumstances.

The incident happened between Saturday and Sunday around 20:00 and 06:00 hours in Chibanda village.

“The police received a report of sudden and unnatural death from Darius Mwansa aged 27 that his wife Bridget Musonda 22 together with his two daughters Mildred Mutale six months and Angel Chitundu aged three were found lying dead on the same bed after suspicion of having had eaten poisoned food,” Munkhondya stated.

According to police, the trio had eaten Nshima with Kalembula, Okra and Caterpillars in the evening before going to bed while the father was away.

She said after eating, the trio went to bed at around 20:00 hours in a camping tent, after their grass thatched house was allegedly set ablaze by unknown people in August this year.

She said the husband returned home and went and cooked dry fish which he had bought as he found his wife sleeping together with his two daughters.

Munkhondya said physical inspection was done and they were found with no visible injuries, but food poisoning was highly suspected.

She said the bodies were in Mporokoso district hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem exercise.
