Opposition Patriotic Front (PF) was in the early hours of Tuesday allegedly petrol-bombed.

Antonio Mwanza, the PF media director has confirmed that the former ruling party secretariat was attacked by unknown people using petrol-bombs and that the matter had been reported to police.

However, when contacted Police public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi said there had been no report of the PF secretariat being petrol-bombed.

But Mwanza said the petrol-bomb attack was but the first of several other ambushes the former ruling party had suffered at the hands of unknown people with their unknown motive.

Mwanza said the attack where two petrol bombs were thrown at the gate of the PF secretariat was carried out by unknown people with the intention of gaining access into the former ruling party offices.

“When the first bomb exploded at the gate of the building, the security guard though it was a tire burst along Panganani Road but when he heard the second which was followed by a blazing fire, the man manning the premises quickly fetched water and quenched the fire,” he said in an interview in Lusaka on Tuesday.

Mwanza recalled that immediately after the 2021 general elections, a mob of cadres believed to have been UPND descended on the PF secretariat and broke into the offices and stole all the equipment, including laptops, desk computers, air-conditions and other gadget they could place their hands on.

He said the PF secretariat had been broken into five times and in all the break-ins, computers and laptops had been stolen.

Mwanza however said the leadership of the former ruling party was deeply concerned that while reports had been made to the police, there had never been any form of investigations to establish who could have been the culprits.

“I can confirm that indeed the PF secretariat was once again under attack…except this time, the premises were petrol-bombed by unknown people around 01:00 hrs on the morning of Tuesday.

“When the guard heard the first blast, he thought it was a tire burst but when the second bomb exploded, there was a blaze of fire. The guard quickly rushed to fetch water and quenched the fire. We have since reported the matter to police,” he said.

He said the party was now worried about the people who worked at the secretariat because their lives were now in danger.

Mwanza stated that the party leadership was deeply worried about the safety of its premises and the building in the surrounding area because the PF secretariat was located along a busy business road.

He therefore called on the police to institute investigations because their mandate was to protect property and lives of citizens.

“The police should not only favour those in power. When the PF was in power it was a darling to the police. So even when we are in opposition let them help to safeguard our lives,” Mwanza said.
