Techbytes: African App developer cashing out as downloads, revenue surge (Business Insider)

In the previous fiscal year, 1.1 billion apps were downloaded in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), according to Business Insider.

Projections indicate that by 2025, app usage and purchases will generate US$1 billion in revenue across the continent.

App downloads in SSA grew by 23 percent year-on-year in 2024, reflecting the rapid digital transformation sweeping across the region.

A report by AppsFlyer, created in collaboration with Google, highlights that financial apps have been a major driver of this growth.

The financial vertical, particularly fintech applications, has experienced remarkable development between 2023 and 2024, especially in the first quarter.

When comparing the first three quarters of 2024 to the same period in 2023, finance app installations increased by 34 percent.

Additionally, in-app purchase (IAP) revenue from banking applications in SSA continues to rise, with a 46 percent increase in Q3 2024 compared to the same period the previous year.

This underscores the growing adoption of digital financial services across the continent.

As Africa’s digital economy expands, app developers—especially those in fintech—are capitalizing on the surging demand for mobile solutions, solidifying the sector’s profitability and long-term potential.
