A Tanzanian truck attempting to smuggle unknown number of bags of mealie meal into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reportedly been impounded in Kasumbalesa.

According to Mafken Radio, the truck was spotted offloading bags of mealie meal branded ‘Mutanda’ from the Congolese side between 01 and 05 hours in the morning of Tuesday.

Chililabombwe District Commissioner, Precious Njekwa, who was part of the anti-smuggling team during the night patrols, confirmed that the truck was currently parked at the Zambia National Service -(ZNS) check point.

Njekwa said illegal export of the commodity had become rampant but maintained that the practice would be fought without ceasing.

This had resulted in soaring mealie meal prices, now at K400 per 25 kilogram in the border towns .
