Students reportedly launch Bally Network Campaign to drum support for Hichilema ahead 2026 polls

Students from higher learning institutions have reportedly launched the Bally Network Campaign to support President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election bid in the 2026 general elections and beyond.

The students assured Hichilema of their continued backing, citing his leadership style and the impact of initiatives implemented under his administration.

The campaign is being spearheaded by Friends of Bally, a youth-driven network.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Wednesday at Anderson Kambela Mazoka House, student representative, Fungai Meki, described the initiative as a national movement led by students from various institutions.

Meki said their endorsement of Hichilema stems from policies such as the restoration of meal allowances, free education, and the expansion of student loans.

“When you think about meal allowances, the expanded student loans, free education, and increased classroom spaces through the CDF, it is clear that education is the great equalizer. Thank you, Mr. President,” she said.

The students, through Meki, also welcomed the proposed constitutional amendments, describing them as progressive and beneficial to all Zambians.

“The 13 proposed amendments are well-timed and should be supported by all well-meaning citizens. We have 17 months before the general elections—enough time to address the constitutional gaps that have caused challenges in the past,” Meki stated.

In response, UPND Secretary General, Batuke Imenda, thanked the students for their unwavering support for President Hichilema.

He emphasized that the UPND was elected into office largely because of the youth vote and expressed delight that students were recognising the government’s goodwill through free education, meal allowances, skills training, and constitutional reforms.

“The government is thrilled to see students appreciating these policies. We urge young people not to be swayed by opposition propaganda aimed at dismantling progressive initiatives like the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), meal allowances, and free education,” Imenda said.

He further urged students to champion Hichilema’s vision and share the administration’s achievements with their peers.

“When you support Bally, you are supporting policies that safeguard your welfare,” he stated.

The students involved in the campaign reportedly represent institutions including Evelyn Hone College, the National Institute for Public Administration (NIPA), the University of Zambia (UNZA), and Fairview College, among others.
