‘Stop drinking, go farming,’ Kanyama urges menfolk not to abandon search for food to women, children

Ruling UPND founding member, Lovemore Kanyama, has called on traditional leaders to take a leading role in promoting agriculture among their subjects, emphasizing its importance for national development and food security.

Kanyama stated that for the country to have sufficient food for domestic consumption and export, all citizens must take farming seriously.

He urged traditional leaders to closely monitor their communities and encourage active participation in agriculture.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, Kanyama also urged men to prioritise farming over excessive drinking, especially as the rainy season approaches.

Additionally, he called on those engaged in charcoal burning to shift their focus to agriculture, warning that the days of unsustainable charcoal business were numbered due to its impact on deforestation.

“The destruction of forests must stop. Charcoal burners need to find alternative livelihoods,” Kanyama said.

He further criticized the practice of leaving women and children to work while men spent their time drinking, stressing that such habits must end to combat hunger effectively.
