Standard body laments manufacture, sales of low quality steel door frames

The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has urged Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) to comply with mandatory specifications in the production of pressed steel door frames to be supplied on the market.

Agency Head of Communications, Brian Hatyoka, said the Zambian Standard (ZS) 357 provides specifications pertaining the minimum standards to produce pressed door frames.

Hatyoka in a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday said specifications set out the sizes, fittings and finish for door frames in a bid to safeguard public safety, health, consumer and environmental protection.

He said in terms of material, for example, pressed steel door frames were supposed to be manufactured from good commercial quality mild steel of not less than 1.2 millimeters (mm).

“ZCSA has, however, noted that a number of pressed steel door frames on the market especially those produced by SMEs do not meet the prescribed mandatory standards on the market,” Hatyoka said.

He said the compromised frames were negatively affecting the country’s construction industry as such facilities don’t last for a long time.

“It is illegal for entities to supply pressed steel door frames on the market in the absence of authorization from ZCSA,” Hatyoka said.

He said in this regard, ZCSA would soon start building capacity in SMEs so that they produce quality frames to be supplied on the market.
