First Quantum Minerals (FQM) government relations superintendent, Winnie Kakunta, says there is need for sustainable energy solutions to support Zambia’s growing mining sector.

Speaking at the Zambia International Mining and Energy Conference (ZIMEC) on Saturday, Kakunta highlighted the surge in mining expansion projects across the country, including FQM’s Kansanshi S3 expansion and Barrick Lumwana’s super pit development.

“These projects require a broader understanding of energy solutions that must be adopted to power the upcoming mining operations,” Kakunta said.

She stressed the importance of leveraging alternative energy sources such as wind and solar while ensuring a stable regulatory framework to support power sector expansion.

Meanwhile, African Development Bank (AfDB) Zambia country manager, Raubil Durowuju, underscored the bank’s commitment to financing projects that enhance revenue generation and economic development for member countries.

“Our financing is not just about making profit. Development must come out of our investments,” Durowuju said, adding that AfDB also considered environmental and resettlement impacts when funding projects.

With Zambia’s mining sector expanding, stakeholders at ZIMEC agreed that integrating sustainable energy solutions was key to ensuring long-term growth and stability in production.
