Former Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs, Reverend Godfridah Sumaili, has expressed concerns over moral decline in Zambia.
Sumaili highlighted issues such as rising divorce rates, family breakdowns, youth violence, and economic hardship affecting families.
In an interview with Zambia Monitor, Sumaili pointed to job scarcity, lack of opportunities for young couples, and government officials prioritising money over citizens’ well-being as key issues.
She urged the government to focus on the needs of the people, especially during crises.
“The country is experiencing a moral decline due to various social and economic issues,” Sumaili said, attributing these problems to a spiritual deficit.

She called for a return to Christian values and principles, emphasizing that leaders should prioritise the people’s needs over financial gains.
Sumaili specifically appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration to turn to prayer amidst economic challenges and climate change effects.
She also criticised the United Party for National Development (UPND) for exporting maize after coming to power, leading to reliance on donations from countries.
