Two years after the Ministry of Gender was dissolved, Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, has urged government to reintroduce the Ministry if Zambia is to achieve more results in the advancement of gender issues.
Mutti said the abolition of the Ministry of Gender was done hastily before results could be achieved in the advancement of the gender agenda.

She was speaking at a panel discussion on the evolution of women in law in Zambia, commemorating 50 years of the Supreme Court.
The Speaker said more results could be achieved under a fully fledged Ministry and not as a division under the Office of the President.
“In my view, the abolition of the Ministry of Gender, we did it too soon. We should have waited until results were achieved. Reducing the Gender Ministry to a department when we have not achieved our targets or results. I urge government to reintroduce the Ministry of Gender to achieve more,” she said.
Former Supreme Court Judge, Florence Mumba, also said scrapping off the Ministry of Gender was done too early.
She argued that Zambia was a young nation in need of such institutions to spearhead gender issues in order for the country to reach the 50-50 percent gender balance.
