Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, has called for sustainable, transparent and mutually beneficial development agreements between Zambia and China during her state visit to China.
Mutti made her remarks on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the 60th anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between China and Zambia, as well as Zambia’s 60th Independence Day in Beijing.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday by National Assembly Senior Media Liaison Officer Nshamba Muzungu, Mutti expressed appreciation to China for being one of the first nations to recognise Zambia’s independence in 1964.
She praised the enduring partnership built on mutual respect, solidarity and cooperation.
“I wish to commend the two countries for strengthening the friendship resulting in Zambia benefiting from China’s support in infrastructure development, trade, health, education, and technology transfer,” Mutti stated.
She highlighted the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA) as a landmark project that provided a critical trade route for Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.
Mutti also applauded the growing parliamentary relations between the two nations, noting the recent establishment of the Media Centre at Zambia’s National Assembly and the Zambia-China Parliamentary Friendship Group, which promotes exchanges and collaboration among lawmakers.

“On behalf of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia, the Parliament of Zambia and the people of Zambia, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to China on the 75th anniversary of its founding,” Mutti said.
She commended China’s socio-economic transformation and its contributions to global development, citing advancements in infrastructure, technology, education, and poverty alleviation as examples of China’s global impact.
Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Cai Dafeng, also spoke at the event, reaffirming China’s commitment to sincere and practical cooperation with Africa.
He stated that the close relationship between China and Zambia has fueled cooperation in various sectors, promoting friendly exchanges and mutual development.
Mutti’s visit, along with Zambian Members of Parliament, was made at the invitation of Zhao Leji, Chairperson of China’s Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
