Southampton have parted ways with manager, Russell Martin, following a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, which left the Saints nine points adrift of Premier League safety.
Martin, 38, led Southampton to promotion last season in his debut campaign, clinching a dramatic play-off final win against Leeds United at Wembley.
However, his side has endured a disastrous return to the top flight, managing just one victory in 16 league games—a 2-1 win over Everton in November.
The Saints have suffered 13 defeats this season and scored a league-low 11 goals.
“Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges we would face as we readjusted to life in the top flight,” Southampton said in a statement.
The club emphasized its support for Martin but acknowledged the urgency of improving results.
“We would like to thank Russell and his staff for their hard work and dedication over the past 18 months.

Everyone connected with Southampton will cherish the memories of last season, especially the play-off final win,” the statement added.
Simon Rusk, the club’s Under-21 manager, will take interim charge of the senior team.
His first test will be a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at home against league leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.
Martin’s dismissal coincides with Wolves sacking their manager Gary O’Neil on the same day, underscoring the mounting pressure on struggling Premier League clubs.
