Small and Medium Enterprise Development Minister, Elias Mubanga, has urged illegal miners to formalise their operations to curb rising mining accidents.

Speaking in an interview on Monday with Zambia Monitor in Kawambwa  Mubanga said the government had introduced a cooperative model to help small-scale miners obtain legal status through mining license facilitation.

“The government wants all mining activities, whether small or large, to be conducted safely and legally.

“Having a certificate of incorporation does not grant permission to mine without obtaining the necessary licenses and safety training,” he said.

He expressed concern over frequent accidents involving informal miners and stressed the importance of adhering to health and safety regulations.

Mubanga also advised small-scale miners to familiarize themselves with standard safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment, to minimize risks.
