The Zambia National Service (ZNS) has unearthed a scam where transporters in Chililabombwe District on the Copperbelt Province are using 20 litre containers and bags of groundnuts to smuggle mealie meal into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Officers and Soldiers deployed at Kasumbalesa check point have seized some trucks full of mealie meal concealed in bags of groundnuts and 20 litre containers respectively.
Zambia National Service Commander Lieutenant General, Maliti Solochi, has commended the officers and soldiers for being alert.
”We have realised that smugglers have become innovative and sophisticated in committing crime, they are using all means possible to get our mealie – meal across the border.
This is very sad, as Zambia National Service were are not leaving any stone unturned in ensuring that we curb the smuggling of mealie meal,” Lt General Solochi said.
He said this on Thursday when he toured Kasumbalesa check point in the company of Copperbelt Provincial Minister, Elisha Matambo and Other Defence and Security chiefs.
Lt General Solochi said it is sad that some citizens are abaiting smuggling instead of helping Government preserve the staple food.
He said Zambia National Service will now start arresting owners of vehicles used in smuggling and later forfeit the vehicles to the State.
”From hence forth we will be arresting the owners of vehicles used in smuggling and the driver after which the vehicle and goods will be forfeited to the State.
It is very said to see Zambians salvage their own country for personal and selfish gains,” Lt General Solochi said.
And Inspector General of Police, Lemmy Kajoba, said it is very unfortunate that some citizens has decided to become unpatriotic for selfish gains.
”Some people don’t care, all they are pre-occupied with is smuggling the mealie – meal and sell it across the border for a little amount of money.
We want to warn you that you might think you are clever but the law will surely catch up with you,” He said.
The Defence and Security chiefs later toured Mokambo and Sakanya borders.
