Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, has called for the full utilization of irrigation schemes across Zambia to enhance agricultural productivity and help meet the government’s target of producing 10,000,000 metric tonnes of maize by 2025, a year marked for accelerating change.

Kangwa made the call during a tour of the Mwomboshi Irrigation Scheme in Chisamba District, Central Province, operated under the Zambia Correctional Service.

He emphasized that achieving 100 percent utilization of irrigation schemes would be key to the nation’s agricultural success.

“If we are to meet the target of 10 million metric tonnes of maize, we need the combined efforts of all farmers—subsistence, commercial, and our state institutions,” Kangwa stated.

He also highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting irrigation through the establishment of several dams across the country and urged farmers to take full advantage of these initiatives to increase productivity.

Central Province Permanent Secretary, Milner Mwanakampwe, praised the role of Zambia’s Defence and Security agencies in boosting maize production.

He noted that their efforts were vital in strengthening the nation’s food security.

Commissioner General Fredrick Chilukutu expressed gratitude for the continued government support in utilizing the irrigation scheme.

“The Zambia Correctional Service has 660 hectares under center pivot irrigation, with 500 hectares planted with maize,” Chilukutu said.

“We operate 13 center pivots at Mwomboshi, and this project showcases what we can achieve with sustained government backing.”

The government’s support for irrigation schemes is seen as a crucial step in increasing Zambia’s agricultural output, promoting food security, and achieving the national maize production target.
