Ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) member, Kelvin Mayondi, has called for transition to federalism from a unitary state structure to cure regionalism.
Mayondi, whose political and national service life spans the United National Independence Party (UNIP) to UPND said a federal state maybe desirable in an ethnically divided nation.
“People always cry victimization on regional and tribal lines when they are facing criminal charges, may be coming up with a federal state will cure this issue,” he said in an interview on Thursday.
Mayondi said apart from uniting the country, a federal system would spur economic development in localities, among other benefits.

Pundits of a federal government define it as a system where power is divided among the larger, stronger, central government of a nation, and the smaller state and regional governments within that nation.
This is done by assigning certain responsibilities to each sector so that the central government has its own job to do, as do the state and local governments.
He said the federal system would allow more local participation in the governance system of the country unlike in the centralised system where power is concentrated at the centre.
