The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) Committee on Mines has called on the Ministry of Mines to be more proactive in promoting safety of miners.

Committee Acting Chairperson, Albert Malama, said the Mine Safety Department under the Ministry should endeavor to prevent accidents and not writing good reports after an accident.

Malama called on the department to be proactive and promote safety in the sector in a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday.

He further implored the labour movement in the sector to remain focused and bargain for better conditions of service for their members.

“When we say conditions of service we don’t just mean the salary, promote good industrial relations in the mining industry Industrial,” Malama stated

He noted with sadness that the country still had some investors who treat miners as mare tools of productions.

Malama emphasized that a motivated labour force was an asset to the company.

“As the Party’s committee in charge of the mines, we sincerely thank our Party and President Hakainde Hichilema for fixing the issues that surrounded both Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and Mopani Copper Mines,” he said.

Malama stated that Hichilema had once more demonstrated that he was committed to fulfilling all campaign promises by fixing both KCM and Mopani Copper mines.

“We also extend our appreciation to the people of the Copperbelt for remaining patient while the issue of the two mines was being handled. We thank Miners for ignoring noise makers,” he said.
