Ride-hailing drivers petition govt over alleged exploitation, security concerns

Online taxi drivers in Lusaka have submitted a petition to District Commissioner, Rosa Zulu, urging the government to intervene in what they describe as exploitation by ride-hailing platforms.

The drivers raised the alarm over security threats following a series of mysterious driver murders and are calling for measures to ensure their safety.

The petition, presented by Zambia Online Drivers Association President, Lucas Chanda, also demanded fairer fare structures, arguing that current rates do not reflect inflation and rising fuel costs.

Drivers propose a reduction of platform commissions from 16.9 percent to 12.9 percent to mitigate their financial strain.

Despite repeated efforts to engage with the companies, drivers report that their concerns have been ignored.

They asserted that the low fares force them to work extended hours for minimal profits, while the ride-hailing companies reap substantial profits from their labor.

Commissioner Zulu acknowledged the drivers’ grievances, emphasizing government’s commitment to protecting its citizens.

She assured the drivers that she would escalate their concerns to higher authorities and engage various ministries to address the multifaceted issues they face, including pricing and security.

“We are protecting the Zambian citizens. We need to protect you because you are Zambians,” Zulu stated, promising to exhaust all possible channels to find a resolution.
