Former Presidential Press Aide, Amos Chanda, has been granted bail by the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court pending the determination of an appeal filed in the Lusaka High Court.

Chanda, who faces a 12-month jail sentence for alleged theft of court records, had been ordered to surrender his passport and provide two working sureties as part of the bail conditions.

Magistrate Irene Wishimanga granted Chanda bail in the sum of K100,000 on his own recognition.

Additionally, Chanda had been instructed to surrender his passport to the senior court clerk.

Chanda, who previously served under ex-President Edgar Lungu, contested the verdict in his appeal, arguing that there was insufficient evidence presented in court to prove his guilt in the alleged theft of case records.

He asserted that the trial Magistrate misapplied both legal principles and factual evidence, citing a lack of concrete evidence indicating stolen records.

Chanda further argued that his conviction was based on compromised evidence and that crucial aspects of the prosecution’s case were overlooked during the trial, particularly regarding the absence of evidence supporting his conviction for theft and destruction of evidence.
