Red Arrows win CECAFA Cup in historical penalty shootout, grab $30,000 prize

Red Arrows have made history by winning the CECAFA Invitational Cup, defeating three-time champions APR FC of Rwanda 10-9 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at full time at KMC Stadium in Dar Es Salaam.

The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Ricky Banda scoring for the Zambian champions in the 62nd minute and Sy Mamadou equalizing for APR deep into stoppage time.

Extra time failed to produce a winner, leading to a tense penalty shootout.

Ciel Ebengo scored the decisive spot kick after APR missed their penalty.

Other successful penalty takers for Red Arrows included Brian Chilimina, Peter Kalota, Michee Malonga Gesimo, Cedric Onyumba, skipper Paul Katema, Thomas Zulu, Ackim Mumba, veteran James Chamanga, and Saddam Yusuf Phiri.

The triumph marks the Airmen’s third trophy in 2024, adding to their MTN Super League and Absa Cup victories.

They also walk away with a $30,000 prize.
