The Zambian government has denied social media rumours claiming that Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, had been arrested for assaulting his wife.

Thabo Kawana, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Media, addressed the misinformation in a statement issued on Friday.

Kawana clarified that the reports circulating online were false and misleading.

He explained that the individual reported to Mtendere Police Station was named Ray Moonga, not Rae Hamoonga.

“The public is encouraged to visit Mtendere Police Station should they wish to verify this information for themselves,” Kawana stated.

He said such rumours are baseless and urged the public to be cautious about the sources of their information.

Kawana also warned against the dangers of spreading unverified information on social media platforms, noting that such actions can lead to unnecessary panic and confusion among the public.

“These actions only serve to cause unnecessary panic and confusion,” he said.

He called on citizens to rely on credible sources of information and to refrain from disseminating falsehoods.

“It is important for the public to rely on verified information and to avoid contributing to the spread of misinformation,” Kawana added.

The government’s swift response aims to address the misinformation and reassure the public about the integrity of official sources and processes.
