Speaking to journalists shortly after visiting the former player at the University Teaching Hospital where he has been admitted since the accident, Katumbi thanked the hospital staff and government for their professionalism in treating the 2012 AFCON winner.

“I am so happy, I just want to say thank you to God because it’s a miracle from God for Kalaba to survive. I’m saying thank you also to the government of Zambia, the doctors, the nurses, to everyone even the journalists, all the Zambian people because they prayed for Kalaba. Kalaba is alive and fit, he can come back and play again,” he said.

Katumbi praised Kalaba and described him as an exceptional talent who played for TP Mazembe.

He disclosed that the player was still part of the club’s set up, saying that he joined the technical team as a coach to nurture young talents.

Kalaba was involved in a fatal road traffic accident where the driver of the Benz they were travelling in died on the spot.

TP Mazembe players raised Kalaba’s Jersey before their game against Al Ahly over the weekend as a way of wishing him a speedy recovery.

Kalaba had a successful career at TP Mazembe for 13 years before retiring last year.

TP Mazembe infamously posted on their Facebook page when the accident had happened that the former captain of the side had died.

The club later clarified that the player was still alive.
