The Zambia Union of Nurses and Midwives Organisation (ZUNMO) has expressed strong support for Minister of Health, Elijah Muchima’s commitment to promoting professionalism within the Ministry.
Union president, Frey Michelo, said in a statement on Thursday that the Union fully endorsed the Minister’s stance, emphasising that it would help restore discipline and professional integrity across the Ministry.
“This direction aligns closely with ZUNMO’s vision for a healthcare system where every nurse and midwife is protected, motivated and empowered to maintain the highest standards of professional excellence,” Michelo stated.
He highlighted that professional excellence could only flourish in an environment free from partisan bias, where the focus is solely on delivering quality healthcare to all individuals, regardless of race, gender, or political affiliation.
Michelo underscored that these values were essential for building a resilient healthcare system that met the needs of the Zambian people.

“ZUNMO urges the Minister to protect the roles of Permanent Secretaries, Directors, and all healthcare workers, ensuring their interests are safeguarded within the ministry,” Michelo added.
He also commended the Minister’s commitment to transparency in recruitment, promotions, and daily operations within the Ministry of Health, stressing the importance of maintaining professional standards and shielding staff from undue influence to achieve quality healthcare for the nation.
“ZUNMO remains committed to working with the Ministry to establish an environment that values transparency, professionalism, and equitable, high-quality healthcare for all Zambians,” Michelo said.
Minister Muchima recently pledged to visit health facilities across the country to observe and improve the conduct and work culture among healthcare staff in his drive to enhance professionalism.
