The Zambia National Men’s Network for Gender and Development (ZNMNGD) is demanding that government priorities the construction of shelters and setting up of the Anti-Gender Based Violence (GBV) Fund.

National Coordinator, Nelson Banda, made the call in a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday.

Banda said government can raise money for the construction of the shelters and the Anti Gender Based Violence Fund.

He said the Organisation is concerned that the country has continued to witness an escalation of gender-based violence being recorded by Zambia Police.

“We feel that the setting up of the Anti Gender Based Violence and the establishment of shelters for survivors has taken long enough after the enactment of the Anti GBV Act of 2011 and yet cases of GBV are taking place every day so there is no justification for further delays,” Banda said.

He said the cases that have shared recently and previously is strong evidence for the government to set up the Fund and shelters.

Banda proposed that government should sale of luxury vehicles as announced by the President and the proceeds from the sale can provide start up funds for the establishment of the shelters and support the needs of survivors.

“Reduced cost of international trips by top government officials : The savings from the trips could be channeled to establish the Anti Gender Based Violence Fund,” he said.
