Primary school head, aged 53, dies in canoe accident on Lake Bangweulu

Kaluba Primary School Head Teacher in Samfya has died after a water vessel capsized on Lake Bangweulu.

The canoe, according to police, was being paddled by two juveniles, aged 13 and 14, when it capsized on lake Bangweulu.

The deceased identified by police as Bornface Mwelwa, 53, was on his way from a meeting when he met his fate.

Luapula Police Chief, Fwambo Siame, said in a statement on Friday that the young paddlers managed to swim to safety.

“John Senge 63 reported that his cousin Bornface Mwelwa 53 drowned when the canoe he was on capsized on lake Bangweulu near Mukamba area,” Siame said.

He said after the meeting, the departed booked a canoe to take him back to school.

The canoe was being paddled by two juveniles identified as Moses Mukashi 13 and Kasaba Chola 14.

When they reached the area called Mukamba, the canoe capsized and the two boys survived after managing to swim, police said.

Siame said physical inspection on the body revealed that it had bruises on his left side of the stomach and blood coming from his nostrils.

He said the body was deposited at Samfya District Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.
