The Zambia National Service (ZNS) says it will begin the regular supply of its Eagles mealie meal to the University of Zambia (UNZA), starting with an initial delivery of 2,000 bags of 25 kilogrammes (kg).
This followed a directive from President Hakainde Hichilema for ZNS to provide affordable mealie meal to students as part of efforts to ease their financial burden.
The decision was announced on Thursday when a delegation from the University of Zambia Students’ Union (UNZASU), accompanied by the Dean of Students, paid a courtesy call on ZNS Commander, Lieutenant General Engineer Maliti Solochi II.
Lt Gen Solochi reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to ensuring students have access to affordable mealie meal, aligning with President Hichilema’s broader goal of making essential commodities accessible to all Zambians.
“The President, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Force, directed me to find ways of supplying students with affordable mealie meal, just as we are doing for many Zambians. This initiative is aimed at reducing the financial strain on students struggling to access affordable food,” Solochi stated.
He urged the Dean of Students to ensure accountability in distributing the staple food and prevent non-students from taking advantage of the initiative.
“I urge you, the students, to be committed to ensuring accountability for these supplies. The smooth flow of this initiative will depend on your ability to manage it responsibly. The Dean of Students should provide oversight to ensure its success,” Lt Gen Solochi emphasized.
In response, UNZA Dean of Students, John Munkombwe, expressed gratitude on behalf of UNZASU, noting that the courtesy visit was also to appreciate the ZNS Commander’s recent visit to the university, during which he donated K100,000 to the student union.
Munkombwe also acknowledged the ongoing construction of ablution blocks at the Great East Road Campus by ZNS.
“Sir, this visit is motivated by your recent presence at the university, where you inspected the construction of ablution blocks undertaken by ZNS, as well as your generous donation of K100,000 to the student union,” Munkombwe said.
