Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, has announced that President Hakainde Hichilema would undertake a working visit to China from August 30 to September 7, 2024.

The President would attend the Ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Haimbe said the Summit would be held in Beijing from September 4 to 6, 2024, under the theme “Joining Forces to Promote Modernisation and Build a High-level China-Africa Community of a Shared Future.”

President Hichilema is expected to join other leaders in advancing common growth and mutually beneficial development for the African continent and China.

“On September 4, President Hichilema will hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to further strengthen the longstanding relations between the two countries, as they commemorate 60 years of diplomatic ties this year,” Haimbe stated.

During the meeting, President Hichilema, President Xi, and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan would witness the signing of an Investment Framework on the revitalization of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA).

“The President is also scheduled to preside over the Zambia Power Development Forum at the Power China Headquarters later on the same day,” Haimbe added.

In addition, President Hichilema will hold strategic meetings on the margins of the Summit with government officials and investors to secure tangible benefits for Zambia.

His itinerary included a bilateral meeting with representatives of the China Railway Construction Corporation and China Non-Ferrous Metals Corporation on September 3, 2024, in Beijing.

Haimbe highlighted the deep strategic ties between Zambia and China, based on common values and mutual respect.

“The two countries maintain a Comprehensive Strategic and Cooperative Partnership, elevated during President Hichilema’s State Visit to China in September 2023,” he said.

Haimbe emphasized that this year’s visit was significant as it builds on past agreements and aims to consolidate Zambia’s ties with China, unlocking opportunities for investment and joint partnerships in sectors such as energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and mining.

“President Hichilema’s international engagements reinforce the administration’s efforts to accelerate socio-economic development and create equitable opportunities for Zambians,” he noted.

President Hichilema is expected to return to Zambia immediately following his engagements in China.
