President Hakainde Hichilema has cautioned Zambia’s media industry on the potential risks and opportunities posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI), stressing the need for urgent regulations to govern its use.

Speaking at the Media Owners Association of Zambia (MOAZ) Annual General Meeting held at Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka on Thursday October 4, 2024, President Hichilema noted that while AI offers immense growth opportunities, it also posed a threat to the survival of media outlets and the integrity of society.

“AI presents both a great opportunity and a threat to media houses and society. However, rules governing it should be established urgently,” President Hichilema stated.

The President emphasized the importance of collaboration between MOAZ and the government in eliminating fake news, calling for truthful editorial policies that uphold professional standards.

“In the current landscape, partnerships between government and the media are important to ensure that the media environment is free, fair, and robust while upholding professionalism, responsibility, and ethical standards,” Hichilema said.

He pointed out that the meeting came at a time when the media industry was evolving rapidly, with new challenges and opportunities emerging daily.

“Years ago, people eagerly awaited morning newspapers, even those that were critical. Today, digital platforms have changed consumption habits. To revive traditional media and promote professional journalism, we must adapt,” President Hichilema advised.

Citing Uganda as an example, the President highlighted the success of media houses working collectively to promote responsible media practices.

He also stressed the need for government, media, and civil society to collaborate in combating misinformation, protecting media freedom and promoting legitimate online sources.

“By doing so, we will restore trust and attract businesses back to traditional media, ensuring a vibrant and responsible press,” he stated.
