President Hakainde Hichilema has emphasised that Zambia’s current energy crisis, exacerbated by drought, requires tangible solutions rather than mere rhetoric or protests.

President Hichilema expressed confidence that through cooperation, strategic partnerships and hard work, the government would overcome these challenges.

He made these remarks during a meeting at State House on Thursday with a delegation from Power China, led by Group Executive Vice President for East and Southern Africa, Jason K Liu.

The President highlighted the strategic partnership and working platform that Zambia and China have established, focusing on various developmental projects in energy, mining, agriculture and infrastructure development.

“Through partnerships like the one with Power China, we aim to find innovative solutions to our energy crisis,” Hichilema stated.

He explained that the government plans to construct small-to-medium sized power plants, which can be completed more quickly than larger projects.

He also announced that Power China had lined up three implementation teams set to arrive in Zambia over the next few weeks.

“These teams will work closely with relevant government departments to focus on energy, water, and agriculture,” Hichilema said.

The President underscored that the partnership with Power China would significantly address Zambia’s energy needs and drive the country’s development forward.

Earlier, Liu highlighted several achievements by the company, including contributing about 45 percent of power generation to the main grid.
