President Hakainde Hichilema has called for an intensified national effort to combat cholera, urging health personnel and stakeholders to ensure robust awareness campaigns to prevent widespread fatalities.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by Lusaka Province Minister, Sheal Mulyata, at Kanyama Level One Hospital on Wednesday, the President emphasized the responsibility of health workers to prioritise public health and avoid the tragic recurrence of cholera outbreaks that claimed over 600,000 lives in the past.
“The health personnel must serve the community first and not engage in business as usual,” Hichilema stated, stressing the urgency of proactive measures in preventing further loss of life.
Kanyama Member of Parliament, Monty Chinkuli, also reiterated the government’s commitment to cholera preparedness in the community.
He highlighted initiatives like the Cash for Work programme, which have reportedly facilitated large-scale cleanups and the clearing of dump sites in the area, as part of the ongoing efforts to curb the spread of the disease.
