President Hakainde Hichilema has urged the University of Zambia (UNZA) to invest in developing a solar farm on its land as part of efforts to address the country’s energy challenges.
The call comes in the context of on going reforms in Zambia’s electricity sector, which includes open access, private generators, independent producers and net metering.
Speaking in Lusaka on Thursday, Hichilema made these remarks during the ceremony where he was conferred with an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration by UNZA.

The university conferred the degree in recognition of his significant contributions to business and humanity, both locally and internationally.
Hichilema emphasized the potential benefits of a solar farm for UNZA, stating, “One of the projects I want to ensure this university undertakes is to use part of its land for a solar farm, which will generate additional electricity.”
He further committed to finding an investor to partner with UNZA on this initiative, pledging, “I will find an investor to partner with the University of Zambia in that business.”
In addition to advocating for the solar project, Hichilema allocated K1.5 million to UNZA for the rehabilitation of one of its hostels.
He urged cabinet colleagues who are UNZA alumni to contribute to maintaining the university’s facilities.
“I am here challenging all my cabinet colleagues who went through this University to take care of their rooms and their blocks so that we can rehabilitate this University,” he stated.
During the same event, UNZA Vice Chancellor, Mundia Muya, commended President Hichilema for his remarkable achievements in business and national administration.
Muya noted, “Because of his outstanding contribution to humanity and business administration in the country and beyond, the University found it necessary to confer President Hichilema with an honorary doctorate in Business Administration.”
