Presidency reiterates Hichilema’s commitment to upholding constitution, knocks opposition

President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed his commitment to upholding and defending Zambia’s Constitution, rejecting any claims of manipulation for personal gain, according to a statement from the Presidency.

Clayson Hamasaka, State House Chief Communications Specialist, emphasized that President Hichilema remained resolute in his promise to uphold the Constitution and had no intention of altering it for personal benefit.

Hamasaka issued the statement on Friday in Lusaka, responding to opposition accusations that the government was seeking to secretly review the Constitution to extend the presidential term limit from five to seven years.

Hamasaka refuted these claims, asserting that President Hichilema was dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the Constitution.

He accused the opposition of spreading false narratives intended to create confusion among the public.

Green Party leader, Peter Sinkamba, voiced doubts about the President’s commitment, citing recent policy reversals as evidence.

Sinkamba noted that a directive issued by Secretary to Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, which required all public service vehicles to be parked by 18:00 hours daily to conserve resources, was recently overturned by President Hichilema.

The reversal aimed to prevent disruptions in public service.

Sinkamba criticized the President for not directly addressing the nation on this matter, suggesting that instead of relying on third parties, President Hichilema should personally reassure the public of his commitment to the Constitution.

He argued that without direct assurances, it was challenging to trust the President’s promises.

Sinkamba stated the importance of clarity on this issue, particularly given the recent changes in directives and the broader context of national resource management amid climate-induced challenges.

He urged President Hichilema to demonstrate unwavering dedication to constitutional principles throughout the remainder of his term.
