Police spreads dragnet to arrest driver involved in hit-and-run accident on Great East Road

The Zambia Police Service is currently investigating a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident that occurred on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, along Great East Road at the University of Zambia (UNZA) Footbridge in Lusaka.

The accident which happened at approximately 18:00 hours was reported at Manda Hill Police Traffic.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, in a statement issued on Wednesday said the accident involved an unidentified male pedestrian, estimated to be between 40 and 45 years old, of unknown address.

The victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also involved was an unknown driver of an unidentified motor vehicle, which was traveling in an east-to-west direction.

The extent of the vehicle’s damage remains unknown as the driver fled the scene.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident occurred when the pedestrian attempted to cross the road from the southern to the northern side, at which point he was struck by the unidentified motor vehicle.

“The body of the deceased has since been transported to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Mortuary, where it awaits identification and a postmortem examination,” Hamoonga said.

The Zambia Police Service urged any witnesses or individuals with information regarding the driver or vehicle involved to assist in the investigation.
