A near-riotous situation broke out in Kasama District, Northern Province, on Saturday after police fatally shot a man identified as Bwalya Mukuka around 16:30 hours.

Mukuka, aged between 25 and 36, was fleeing from the police with friends in a Toyota Vitz when he was shot near Location Market.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Police Assistant Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi, said officers managed to restore order after the incident.

Chilabi explained that on October 19, 2024, at around 16:00 hours, business owners in Kasama reported that unknown individuals had been physically harassing them and extorting money.

Officers responded swiftly but found the suspects had already fled.

“A search was initiated, and the suspects were tracked to Chambeshi Market in Location Compound,” Chilabi said.

Upon noticing the police, the suspects fled in an unregistered white Toyota Vitz.

A chase ensued, but the suspects ignored police warnings and continued to flee despite shots being fired into the air.

Chilabi explained that police aimed a shot at the vehicle’s tyres, but an errant bullet struck Mukuka, who was driving.

He was rushed to Kasama General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The other suspects fled and remain at large. Mukuka’s body has been deposited at Kasama General Hospital mortuary, pending a postmortem and burial.

Police have opened an inquiry into the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
