Police reveal more details on arrested Chinese nationals, to charge suspects for smuggling, money laundering

Zambia Police Service has revealed more details on the arrested two Chinese nationals, Zhao Yanjing, and Zhao Changson, allegedly caught with gold and undeclared foreign currency.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, stated that the two suspects were believed to have crossed into Zambia from Zimbabwe via the Chirundu border.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday, Hamoonga disclosed that the suspects were intercepted by police on suspicion of carrying precious stones.

“Acting on reliable intelligence, the police initiated an investigation and conducted a thorough search of the vehicle in which the suspects were traveling,” Hamoonga said.

During the search, officers discovered a substantial amount of undeclared currency and concealed gold bars weighing 29.9 kilogrammes.

“Specifically, a sum of US$200,000 in cash and 29.9 kilogrammes of gold were found hidden within the door panels of the vehicle,” he added.

On Friday, Inspector-General of Police, Graphel Musamba, announced that the seizure of 29.9 kilogrammes of gold and US$200,000 in cash hidden within the door panels of a vehicle belonging to a Chinese national, Zhao Changson.

The suspects have been charged with multiple offenses, including fraudulently dealing with metals in violation of Section 289 of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Other charges include smuggling, contrary to Sections 149, 156, and 157 of the Customs and Excise Act, Chapter 322; failure to declare currency, contrary to Section 41(a) of the Customs and Excise Act, Chapter 322; and use of a vehicle to carry goods liable for forfeiture, in violation of Section 159 of the same act.

The suspects are also facing charges of money laundering, in contravention of Section 71 of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 19 of 2010.

Hamoonga indicated that the duo were expected to appear in court soon to answer the charges leveled against them.
