Suspected police officers in Lusaka have accidentally shot a grade 12 pupil and a 24-year-old woman while pursuing alleged criminals in two motor vehicles.

Police identified the victims as a male, aged 17, Grade 12 pupil at Chibolya Secondary School in Lusaka, and Tracy Kadantu, aged 24, of Chipata Compound in Lusaka.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Police Public Relations officer, Rea Hamoonga, said the victims only sustained wounds.

“The juvenile sustained a gunshot wound to the right leg, while Kadantu sustained a wound to the left leg from stray bullets,” Hamoonga said.

He said the victims were immediately rushed to Lusaka Central Police Station where medical forms were issued.

“Medical forms were issued, and the victims were immediately rushed to the University Teaching Hospital for medical treatment. Their conditions are currently reported to be stable,” he said.

No mention was made of capture of the alleged criminals nor was the identify of the police officers revealed.

Hamoonga, however, described the vehicles both suspected officers were on during the pursuit.

“The victims were accidentally shot at by suspected police officers who were pursuing alleged criminals in two motor vehicles, identified as a Toyota Mark X and a Toyota IST, both without captured registration numbers,” he said.

He indicated that the suspected officers were pursuing another vehicle, a Toyota Progress with registration number, BAF 5711, black in color, he said.
