Undesirable social media posts may have led a Kitwe man to set himself ablaze to avoid facing ‘shame’, police have disclosed.

Copperbelt Police Chief, Peacewell Mweemba, could not disclose the manner of the posts in a statement on Sunday.

A businessman identified as Jeston Mwanza, aged 32, reportedly went straight into his abode, shut the room and set self-ablaze upon seeing what was posted about him on social media.

“Police in Kitwe has recorded a suspected suicide case on Saturday between 16:00 and 16:45 hours in Kamitondo township in which Jeston Mwanza, 32, is said to have told one of his family members that he had been publicized on socia media and locked himself in the bedroom and later set the room ablaze,” Mweemba narrated.

He said Newstead Mwanza, 47, reported to the police that his brother had taken his life by setting himself ablaze.

Jetson’s body was found with sustained burns all over his body.

Mweemba said neighbours checked in and managed to open the door and found that fire had burnt everything in the bedroom together with the victim who laid helplessly on the burnt down bed.

Fire brigade officers and the police rushed to the scene to quench the fire and took the body to the hospital mortuary.
