Police report Mpika woman shot by unknown assailants at Shanghai market

A 42-year-old woman from Mpika District, Shanghai Village, has sustained severe injuries after being shot by unknown assailants using a homemade gun at Shanghai Market.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed the incident, identifying the victim as Maureen Mwenya.

The shooting occurred around 19:00 hours on Monday while Mwenya was with her friend, Mulubwa Kapamba, at a shop in the market.

Hamoonga revealed that Mwenya suffered multiple bullet wounds, including a fractured left arm, injuries to the left side of her face, and her back.

“As Kapamba was locking up the shop, she heard a gunshot and turned to find Mwenya bleeding and screaming in pain,” he said.

Members of the public rushed the victim to Michael Chilufya Sata Hospital, where she remains under medical care, reportedly in significant pain.

Police officers from Mpika Police Station visited the scene and recovered a homemade rifle, a plastic cartridge, and a cocking pin, which have been secured as evidence.

Police said investigations were ongoing.
