Police report 20 deaths from 270 traffic accidents during farmer’s holiday

Police have reported 270 road traffic accidents nationwide during this year’s Farmer’s Holiday, resulting in 20 deaths.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, stated that 19 of the accidents were fatal, leading to 20 fatalities.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Hamoonga also reported 40 serious road traffic accidents, resulting in 53 injuries.

“Slight road traffic accidents were 64, resulting in 93 slight injuries. Damage-only road traffic accidents were 147 incidents,” he added.

According to the report, Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of accidents with 101, followed by Copperbelt with 52.

“Compared to the 2023 Farmer’s Holiday, total road traffic accidents decreased from 288 in 2023 to 270 in 2024, showing a slight decrease of 18 accidents,” Hamoonga further mentioned.

He noted that fatal road traffic accidents increased from 8 in 2023, with 10 fatalities, to 19 in 2024, with 20 fatalities, showing an increase of 11 accidents and 10 fatalities.

“Serious road traffic accidents increased from 25 in 2023, with 50 serious injuries, to 40 in 2024, with 53 serious injuries, showing an increase of 15 accidents and 3 serious injuries,” stated.

Hamoonga also pointed out that slight road traffic accidents increased from 63 in 2023, with 87 slight injuries, to 64 in 2024, with 93 slight injuries, showing a slight increase of 1 accident and 6 slight injuries.

“Damage-only road traffic accidents decreased from 192 in 2023 to 147 in 2024, showing a decrease of 45 accidents,” he stressed.

Total casualties increased from 147 in 2023 to 166 in 2024, showing an increase of 19 casualties.

“Admission of guilty fines increased from K522,085 in 2023 to K629,545 in 2024, showing an increase of K107,460,” Hamoonga said.
