Police probe killing of baby, suicide cases during holiday break

The Zambia Police have said they are investigating a case of infanticide in which a fully developed baby was found dumped by unknown people in a pit latrine in Lusaka’s Kamwala South area.

The baby was discovered on January 1, 2023 around 22:00 hours by the caretaker at the same house which is shared by many tenants.

Police were alerted and together with community members retrieved the body of the baby girl from the pit latrine.

Police  deputy public relations officer Danny Mwale  said  in a media statement on Monday that the body was in the University Teaching Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial.

“ Investigations have been instituted,” Mwale stated.

He also disclosed that Police in Rufunsa District are holding a 39-year-old man for the offence of incest.

The suspect is alleged to have had canal knowledge of his grandmother aged 67 and  was  apprehended by members of the community at a named village on January 1, 2023 around 05:00 hours.

“Initial investigations revealed that the victim who has impaired vision went to sleep in her house alone on December 31, 2022 around 20:00 hours and on January 1, 2023 at around 05:00 hours, the suspect was seen running out of the same house by his aunty,” Mwale said.

She alerted members of the community who gave chase and apprehended him and police visited the scene and arrested the suspect while the victim was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old man of Chaisa Compound in Lusaka committed suicide after alleged pressure from his divorced wife over school fees.

He  said  the deceased was identified by his brother as Peter Zulu.

The incident occurred on January 1, 2023 between 01:00 hours and 05:00 hours at unknown house number in Chaisa Compound.

Police preliminary investigations indicate that on January 1, 2023, the deceased was seen among his friends celebrating the New Year at one of the bars  in Chaisa Compound.

His brother, who they share a room with was reported to be out during the same period but when he went home around 05:00 hours, he found the deceased hanging by the neck tied to the rooftop in their room.

Police were alerted and visited the scene and the  deceased was found hanging by the neck to a string.

Further investigations revealed that the deceased was heard complaining that his divorced wife allegedly gave him pressure on the School fees for their only child who now qualified to Grade 10.

The body was deposited in University Teaching Hospitals mortuary awaiting postmortem as the police have opened an inquiry file into the matter.
